Peacemakers often talk about community service when we gather. We recognize that we can all play a part, large or small, in making the world better. In the spirit of doing their part, Peacemakers Akangbe, Lori, Bud, Gabriel, Javier, Mandi and Robby have ably assisted the Parent University in Macon.
Parent University offers a wide variety of learning experiences to parents and others who work with children. Courses are offered on three Saturdays in the spring and again in the fall. Classes, childcare (for ages three-eleven) and lunch are provided free of charge. To make the classes, childcare, and lunch run smoothly for about 100 adults requires multiple hours of planning. Bud Fletcher, Peacemakers board member and camp facilitator, is fondly dubbed “Dean of Parent University” for his leadership of and dedication to the planning committee.
Akangbe, Lori, Gabriel, Javier, Mandi and Robby have given many hours as well, often on Saturday mornings. Specific jobs they have handled include: Preparing bagel-and-cream-cheese-with-coffee breakfasts; registering participants for individual classes; registering children for childcare; escorting children to their classes; setting up lunch; creating a database of students; and cleaning up at the end of sessions.
In our community, many opportunities for young people to be of service exist. Macon Outreach needs help with stocking shelves, especially during the holiday season. Loaves & Fishes needs the same kind of help. Communities in Schools welcomes tutors at their after-school programs (Thursday afternoons from 4:00-5:00).
