Ocumulgee Indian Celebration

Winter '02 Peacemaker members La Porshia H., Adam S. and Javier L. proved themselves to be potter extraordinaire. They spent most of their time at the Indian Celebration at the clay workshop, where they produced spiders, pinch pots, snakes, anthropomorphic figures, Wilson (from Castaway) and even flower arrangements. Other Peacemakers—Ja-Davia H., Shemeka L. and Tameka L. and Mandy L.—were enthusiastic dancers, especially during the Friendship Dance. Food is always a popular part of any Peacemakers event, and this was no exception. We filled up on buffalo burgers, fry bread and roasted corn. As I left the parking area of the celebration with six Peacemakers in my van, I asked them why we went to the event. The responses I got from the young people (whose ages range from 8 to 15) with me were thoughtful: “They were here first”; “Because we’re all people”; “We want to know about people other than ourselves.” Then I knew it had been a good day.
