Peacemakers Camp 2008 - In Their Own Words

courtney"Peace camp was the best thing I have ever done in my life!  I really liked to swim and I swam with my friends.  It was fun to be Peaceful with others.  The best part about Peace camp was that I made new friends.  The coolest thing was that I was away from my parents!  It was fun to be at college."  -  Courtney (9 years old, King Group)

meredith"During summer vacation I went to Peacemakers Camp.  I had a great time! Peace camp was my first overnight camp and I made many new friends. The counselors and teachers were awesome.  They taught us about peace and bringing peace to our world.  I can’t wait for next summer’s Peacemakers Camp!" - Meredith (9 years old, Ghandi Group)

My Experience at Peacemakers Camp

Will
This year, I got the chance to attend Peacemakers camp.  At first, I thought it would be boring and I would hate it, but I was very wrong.  At the camp, I learned peace concepts and skills that will last me a lifetime.
First, I’ll give you some quick information about what you do at camp.  Peacemakers is a camp devoted to teaching children about how to keep peace forever, which is shown in the main idea May Peace Prevail on Earth.  You are sorted into one of three groups depending on your age.  They are named after three very peaceful people.  The first group is for Martin Luther King, which is for 8 and 9 year olds, then there is one for Mahatma Ghandi, which is for the 10 and 11 year old, and finally, there is one for Sojourner Truth, which are the 12 and 13 year olds.

At camp, the campers have a one to three hour class with their group on a topic that has to do with peace and unity; they interact by playing soccer, horse back riding swimming, and playing games; and each night, there would be a lesson or a speaker.  All in all, it was an excellent experience, and I can’t wait to do it again next year.   -   Will (12 years old, Truth Group)

The CIT Experience

yeohowshua

Over the years, I have had my share of issues when it comes to bullies and handling conflicts.  When I went to Peacemakers Camp, it seemed as if it all changed for me.  While I was at Peacemakers Camp, I was taught what was called the seven steps of the conflict resolution.  Once I decided to apply the steps into my life, I stopped being bothered and people started to respect me more.  These steps weren't the only thing I got out of being a Peacemaker.  I also learned a lot about other Peacemakers and had fun meeting and getting to know other people.  After being a camper for one year, I just had to come back.  So I applied to becoma a CIT (counselor-in-training).  Three years have passed since I became a CIT.  They were all full of fun because I was working with children and trying to get them to understand the importance of being a Peacemaker.  Hands down I would recommend anyone who likes to go swimming, play sports, sing, dance, learn new things, and just have fun to attend Peacemakers Camp!  Yeohowshua  (15 years old)

Peacemakers Celebrate Earth Day

The camping trip on Earth Day weekend was a blast! We all got to go swimming (the real brave hearts, that is) and go boating even though it was cold, and some of us tipped over in our boat. We also took hikes and got lost (and found our way back).

Peacemakers “Show” Hits the Road

Where do I begin? Peacemakers WORKING Board has stirred up so much dust since my report last month that I hardly know where to start.

The Interconnected Web

We Unitarian Universalists often mention interconnectedness in terms of our inextricable human bond with our natural environment or with humankind as a whole. In this writing, I refer to a much narrower scope, as I share a recent incident that moved me deeply.

Make A Difference

I’m in a pensive mood of late: it’s common at this time of year, I know. The holiday season, the short days, the busyness of our lives and the coming New Year all cause us to reflect.
